As it was being rumored over the last few days, Apple Inc. finally announced its second tablet in the iPad series - the iPad 2, at a press event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco, California, on 2nd March, 2011. What was even more interesting was the fact that the device was announced in person by Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself. It was his first public appearance after the company announced that he would be going on a medical leave for some time to focus on his health earlier in January. Apple didn't just announce the second generation iPad, but also gave a detailed account of its features, specifications, and - most important of all, the release dates for the United States and the United Kingdom.
Apple iPad 2 Technical Specifications
The technical specifications of this device have been making waves in the tech arena for quite some time now, and most of the rumors about the same seem to have come true. As some of the initial iPad 2 rumors suggested, Apple iPad 2 does feature two cameras (though the specification is not known as yet), a Dual-core A5 chip, a powerful battery and the iOS 4.3 operating system. Given below is the list of technical specifications of iPad 2, followed by some amazing features that you need to watch out for.
*The specifications of the cameras are yet to be announced.
**Only available in Wi-Fi+3G model.
Apple iPad 2 Features
Apple iPad 2 boasts of being faster, lighter and thinner than the original iPad. It is armed with two cameras - one at front and the other one at rear. The presence of a front camera does hint at video calling facility which is yet another reason why you need to look forward to buy this device. The new iPad sports a LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology and fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating like the one used in iPhone 4. Even though there were some rumors about Apple iPad 2 screen being cut down to 7 inches, the company seems to have preferred to stick to 9.7 inch screen.
Other than the internal components, even the external components have been subjected to revamp. Apple A4 chip has been replaced by the all new Apple A5 - which makes the iPad 2 CPU twice as powerful as the ones in its predecessor. At the same time, the GPU that this device sports is believed to be 9 times faster than the one is original iPad. When it comes down to the Apple iPad 2 memory, one hopes that this device will have better or a higher memory module compared to the older iPad. However, no specifications have been provided with regards to the internal RAM, but like its predecessor, it comes in all the 3 storage options, maxing out at the familiar 64GB.
Apple seems to have taken a serious note of Android 3.0 Honeycomb release - at least the inclusion of iOS 4.3 hints at this very fact. Simiarly, the inclusion of three-axis gyro, accelerometer and ambient light sensor are all set to add to your iPad experience. iPad 2 also boasts of 10-hour battery life, thanks to the new built-in 25-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. Of the amazing accessories, the Smart Cover for iPad 2 is one to look out for. The magnetic cover doesn't just protect the iPad but also doubles up as a keyboard stand. Interestingly, you don't need to sleep or wake up your iPad now as the Smart Cover which attaches itself to the iPad does that for you.
Apple iPad 2 Release Date
As with Apple iPad 2 features, its release date also made a lot of buzz in the tech arena as everybody was eager to know when Apple will release this tablet. As we have always been saying, Apple products are launched within a week or two after they are announced - and the second generation iPad is no exception. The much anticipated device is all set for a grand release on 11th March, 2011, in the United States. At the same time, the United Kingdom release is scheduled for 25th March, 2011. Many people will be pleased to know that the carriers for the new iPad are AT&T and Verizon.
Apple iPad 2 Price
Apple plans to launch six models of iPad 2 on 11th March - three of which are Wi-Fi only, while the other three are Wi-Fi+3G. As far as Apple iPad 2 cost is concerned, it starts with US$499 which is the basic 16GB Wi-Fi only model. The other two Wi-Fi only models are priced at US$599 (32GB) and US$699 (64GB) respectively. In case of Wi-Fi+3G models, the 16GB model is priced at US$629, the 32GB at US$729 and the 64GB is priced at US$829. The fact that there has been no announcement on Apple iPad 2 pre order means that the device will directly go for sale at the App Store from 11th March, 2011.
Even though we still have to wait for a few more days before Apple iPad 2 reviews are out, this list of features does make it look quite promising indeed. Apple hasn't just taken a note of what people were missing in the original iPad, but also made sure that all these things are included in the new iPad. If the device does stay up to expectations, it will easily take on the numerous Android tablets that have been released or which are scheduled for release in 2011. Now that's something which only time will tell - another fortnight perhaps.
