It would be impossible for an individual to store, much less read, all of these. In many places public libraries provide convenient repositories for some of these books. As an example, the largest library in the world, the United States Library of Congress, has millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts in its collections. It even provides a searchable online catalog. More specialized libraries are also available at various universities and other institutions. However, what do you do if you don’t live close to a major library? Or your local library doesn’t have the book that you are looking for?

Many book collections are now available online. The Internet Public Library has links to dozens of online resources. This is a service founded at the University of Michigan School of Information and hosted by Drexel University’s College of Information Science & Technology. The online libraries referenced cover a broad range of topics.

Not surprisingly, the most common books found online are the classics. These are works that have endured the test of time. In addition, these works are generally in the public domain, or no longer protected by copyright. Such classics include those found in The Harvard Classics and Shelf of Fiction, which is available online at Bartleby.com. This is a collection that began in 1909 as the result of a challenge to Harvard University’s president Charles Eliot. He had made the statement that a liberal education could be obtained simply by reading for fifteen minutes a day from a collection of books that could fit on a three foot shelf. This estimate was later expanded to a five foot shelf. Challenged to provide such a collection, the now famous Harvard Classics was born. Bartleby’s also provides the complete text to the 1914 Oxford edition of the Complete Works of William Shakespeare. The Classic Literature Library also contains the complete works of Shakespeare. In addition, it has the German translations of 19 of his plays. It also contains the complete works of Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, and others.

Other sites have similar collections, such as Bibliomania.com, which has 2,000 classic texts online, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Online Books Page, which has over 25,000 free books online. In addition to works of fiction, many of these sites include dictionaries, thesauruses, and religious books, such as the Bible and Koran.

There is no doubt that the Internet is making it easier to do research on virtually any subject imaginable. This accessibility has now reached out to encompass classic works of fiction. This facilitates the search for a particular piece of text when doing research, making it an invaluable tool. Many of the sites mentioned above also allow you to purchase a favorite book. E-book Piracy a Matter of Concern?

The last decade saw a humongous increase in the piracy of music and videos. With many users buying and then sharing their music and movies, piracy affected this industry in a huge way, causing losses of billions of dollars. And it was not just limited to music and video. With computers becoming so important in everyday life, software too become a major field for piracy. Right from entire operating systems to seemingly useless programs, piracy captured it all.

In the latest trend, piracy has made its way into the world of e-books as well. As technology has improved and more and more affordable e-book readers are available, digital content for these readers is also on an increase. While e-books cost less than conventional paper books, many manufacturers also claim that they are easier to read than regular paper books and are also better for the eyes. Taking this into account, e-book readers have become the latest rage for reading aficionados. Almost all readers have a inbuilt 'store' from where users can buy books directly to their reader, making the process of getting a new book a whole lot easier. All in all, the pros of having an e-book reader outweigh the cons, and hence many people are making the shift to digital reading.

With the increase in the popularity of e-books, pirated copies of these books were bound to hit the streets sooner or later. With popular books, such as Dan Brown's 'The Lost Symbol' being downloaded free more than 100,000 times, it can safely be said that piracy has made an entry in the e-book sector as well. Efforts to curb piracy have been undertaken from time to time, and the last decade saw some major steps being taken to curb music, video and software piracy, with sites being shut down and even individual users being sued. While these steps have shown some respite in the amount of pirated content, there are still huge amounts of pirated content available on the web.

News of how easy it is for e-books to be pirated has made authors reconsider if they should make their books available in the e-book format. Illegal sales of almost 100,000 copies in a few days is a nightmare for any bestselling author. With free e-book copies available, sales of regular printed copies will also tend to suffer. However, with the rapid popularity of the e-book format, these authors are caught between a rock and a hard place. Statistics show that individuals with e-book readers buy e-books 3 times more than regular readers buy books. And with quarterly sales of more than $35 million dollars, the e-book industry is too big for authors to miss out on. But the worry still remains, and this can be seen with what author Sherman Alexie said "I'd be really worried if I were Stephen King or James Patterson or a really big bestseller that when their books become completely digitized, how easy it's going to be to pirate them".

Though Sherman Alexie has a valid point, there is always going to be piracy, no matter how tight security is, and no matter what punishments are meted out. Ana Maria Allessi, at HarperCollins put this decision for authors in a new perspective, "E-book technology offers so many positives for both the author and the consumer that any revenue lost to piracy may just be a necessary evil". Though not many authors may follow that kind of logic, she may be right. After all, even with all the billions of illegal song downloads, Apple's Itunes Store has still managed to be the largest seller of music in the world.

Or, you could just be like JK Rowling. With more than 400 million copies of her books sold, she has just refused to make e-book formats of the Harry Potter books available.
