Sleep and Weightloss Are A Good Pair

Sometimes, weightloss seems impossible. Even when we stick to a healthy food plan, and exercise, our weightloss efforts sometimes hit a plateau. What is going on???

Are you getting enough sleep? Are you sleeping less than 8 hours a day?

One of the body's basic needs is sleep. And if we don't get enough sleep each day our bodies do not function properly. A lack of sleep can "mess with" the body's metabolism and change hormone levels. In fact, higher levels of insulin, which have been linked to a lack of sleep, can make losing weight more difficult.

Even when our hormone levels are good, a lack of sleep can affect behavior and make losing weight more difficult.

When we are tired we have a lack of energy and may be tempted to eat more (many times sweets) for an energy boost. This kind of eating may raise your blood sugar level and make you feel better (albeit briefly), but most times we don't use those extra calories and they become stored as fat.

We also burn fewer calories when we exercise when we are tired. So even though you may put in the time, your workout will most often be less intense and as a result you will burn fewer calories.

We all share many demands on our time and it may seem impossible to get 8 hours of sleep each night. However, as difficult as it might be to find 8 hours to rest, it is important to know that sleep is a basic need for good health and good diet. In fact it is as important as good, healthy food, and regular physical activity.

Lack of sleep could soon be considered a risk factor for obesity. Statistics show that 65 percent of Americans are overweight and 63 percent of people don’t get enough sleep a night. So, in goes hand-in-hand that many people who are overweight also don’t sleep enough.

Pay attention to your body...know the signs. If you're tired, stop what you are doing...shut down the computer, shut off the TV, unplug (or put on silent) the phone. And if possible tell your significant other, and the kids, etc to fend for themselves tonight and get yourself to bed...You'll feel 100% better, rested and ready for the next day. Remember, a healthy, working metabolism needs rest!

Here are few tips to follow:

Don't eat right before bed
Make sure you eat a good dinner…don't go to bed hungry
Exercise at least three hours before you settle in for the night
Try reading a book, having a sleepy tea, or warm bath
Avoid caffeine, cigarettes, and alcoholic beverages
Don't take a daytime nap
Set your thermostat to "sleep comfortable"
Pull down the shades …a dark room will help
Try some soothing music

Don’t let this information about sleep and weight loss become another stress factor in your life. DO take charge of the situation and examine the possible reasons to why you are losing sleep so that you can do something about it.

The Mythical 'Slim Zone'

I just drove past a gym that was advertising group-exercise classes like this:

'Small classes, lots of fun, no mirrors.'

No mirrors?
Why on earth is that a selling point?
Sure, mirrors aren't necessary... but why would their absence be seen as part of sensible marketing strategy?
Something to be advertised?

Maybe for the same reason that people don't want to know their weight or their body-fat percentage when I assess them.

"Don't tell me, don't tell me" people say to me as they reluctantly stand on the scales with their eyes shut.
"But you weigh what you weigh right?"
"Yeah but I don't wanna know."
"Why not?"
"I'll get depressed."

So I tell them their weight and they get angry at me.
Too funny.
Nasty Craig.

"Don't get grumpy at me... I didn't do that to your body."

When it comes to reality, we're experts at avoiding it.
I've written a post on 'head-in-the-sand-itis' before but it seems that we may be heading into an epidemic.
A pandemic even.

Maybe we're there already.

It amuses me that a business can send out this message:
"Exercise with us and you won't have to look at your fat selves in the mirror"

"Yep, sign me up!"

I think some of us should be surrounded by mirrors twenty four-seven until we stop deluding ourselves and start to get proactive.

I'm not a fan of mirrors in gyms for vanity reasons but they are valuable for:
1) Teaching correct exercise technique and
2) Keeping us grounded.

"Oh yes... (in a feeble, pathetic voice), but I find it so painful to look at myself in a mirror, it hurts so much."

Really?

Well, wait for your first heart-attack; you might rethink your definition of pain.
And wait until your pancreas is so shot that you have to medicate every day for the rest of your life to manage your self-induced diabetes... then we'll chat.

A little short-term emotional discomfort now doesn't remotely compare to the world of hurt you're gonna endure if you don't change your mindset, your habits and your lifestyle.

No melodrama, just honesty.
It is what it is.

As I always say to my audiences "I can tell you what you wanna hear, or I can tell you the truth... you can get offended, defensive and precious... or you can get busy changing your reality."

I actually tell people to go home, take all their clothes off and take a really good look at themselves in the mirror from all angles.
Slowly.
Preferably take photos as well.
Why?
Because it's reality, that's why.

It's you.
It's not some computer-generated future fat version of you, it's you right now.
Deal with that, toughen up, get over the self-pity (it's annoying and achieves nothing) and then you will start to see results quickly.
Real change.

Our physical reality doesn't usually align with psychological reality.
In other words, it's almost impossible for you to be objective about you.

Over the years I have taken thousands of 'before' photos of people (front, side and rear) before they start their weight-loss/fitness endeavor.
Invariably they are stunned when they see the pictures.
Why are they so shocked?
Because when it comes to their body, they live in some alternative reality; The Slim Zone.
The one where they look forty pounds lighter.

Amazingly, people always ask me to refrain from showing the photos to anyone else because on some level they believe that somehow the photos are worse than the 'in the flesh' reality.

"See me standing here in my workout gear but don't look at that photo we took five minutes ago (in the same clothes) 'cause I'm so much slimmer in person."
"I don't really look like that photo."

Weird.

I know that I may sound harsh to some of you and I know my approach and philosophy won't sit well with everyone, that's okay.
But twenty five years of going around in circles with people about the same issues and having the same conversations (often with the same people) will make you a little practical and matter-of-fact.
Okay, blunt.

I care more about your heart, arteries, lungs and overall physical health than I do about telling you what you want to hear; what's comfortable for you.
I'm not really about popularity, I'm about change.
Results.

I know I could write more reader-friendly, politically-correct content but I would be compromising what I believe and watering down an important message.
So blunt Craig it is.

I'm not interested in fluffing someone's emotional pillow or propping up their poor self-esteem for five minutes.
I'm interested in their long term physical health.
I'm interested in the truth of the situation.

I'm interested in genuine, forever (never going back) amazing, physical change.
It's very possible but we continue to rationalize, justify and find new and exciting ways to sabotage our own goals and perpetuate our misery.
We consistently waste our potential.
And we continue to let our mind get in the way of our body.

We choose to inhabit the mythical Slim Zone.

Yep, I care about people's feelings and emotional state and yes, I factor them into every interaction with every person... in fact, I work on the premise that getting in shape is largely an emotional process.
And Yes, I was a fat kid, so I get 'it'.

However... I won't be getting rid of the mirrors in my gym any time soon.

The ancient art of COMPLICATION

Do you ever marvel at some people's uncanny ability to make the simple, complex?
The straight forward, anything but?

A ten minute task, a two week saga?

I meet these people every day.
Please stop sending them my way.
They are the woe-is-me brigade.
The Brothers (and Sisters) Grim.
(The real Brothers Grimm were two German dudes who published a bunch of folk stories and fairy tales about two hundred years ago... that's for those of you who aren't as old as me!!).

Yep, some people spend their whole lives making stuff complicated.
More complicated than it needs to be anyway.

Relationships... a constant soap-opera.
Career... messy and problematic.
Getting in shape... a perpetual roller-coaster of losing and gaining.
Finances... a daily money melodrama.

If you didn't know better, you might think that some people actually revel in the drama and attention.

In Australia we have a curious creature known colloquially as the 'Drama Queen'.
They are both male and female and their natural habitat is... everywhere.
Unfortunately.
They are the poster boys (and girls) for the art of complication.
They are also another cousin of the Energy Vampire.

I'm all for dealing with the (genuine) complications and the tough stuff that life throws at us, but I'm not for making things more difficult than they need to be.
Or making a mountain out of a molehill.
(So 1963 that expression... I love it).

When people come to talk to me about getting in shape (dropping some weight for example), I will invariably give them some highly complex and extremely scientific advice:

Move a bunch more, eat a bunch less.
Get yer heart rate up.
Get a bit sweaty.
Do it consistently.
See ya next time.

It's very simple... but people still don't do it.

That look of disappointment on their face is hilarious.
They think that I might let them in on some little-known scientific weight-loss secret.
Give them a shortcut perhaps.
A pill maybe.

Wave my magic wand.
Pull a six-pack outa my hat.

"Okay, here it is Mr Smith... put in less calories than you expend.. and you'll lose fat."
"Do it for long enough and you'll lose a buncha fat."

"Too complicated for you?"
"Taking notes?"
"Should I talk slower?"
"Any questions?"

"Mr Smith.. where are you going?"
"Mr Smith...?"
"Come back here fatty..."

The problem is that we don't actually want simple, we want painless.
And effortless.
And simple... ain't always painless.
Or effortless.
Or easy.
And we love... easy.

(Dear English Profs, I know I shouldn't start all those sentences with 'And', so save yourself some key strokes).

Some of the most effective (and simple) strategies for creating real change (in many areas of our lives), require us to get uncomfortable.
Yes, it's uncomfortable but it's also kinda simple, straight forward.

Some of us have an aversion to discomfort because we're spoiled, precious babies who want amazing results without the effort.
And amazing doesn't work like that.
Get your head around that concept and you'll make some progress instantly.

We are constantly looking for quick fixes and miracle solutions because we love shortcuts.
But the reality is that shortcuts don't produce forever change and ironically, they (shortcuts) often lead to complications(!) down the track.
Weird huh?

Interestingly, the more we don't deal with stuff (avoid discomfort, put our head in the sand, look for shortcuts), the more dysfunctional and the less capable we become.
Ironic, when we consider that actually dealing with pain and discomfort is where the real growth and learning comes from.

Some simple (uncomplicated) science for those who wanna drop a few pounds:
(Not that this post was meant to be about weight-loss... but I thought I'd chuck it in to demonstrate the simplicity of change).

(1) Body-fat is essentially stored energy (calories).
(2) If you expend more than you put in, you'll be in energy deficit.
(3) If you're in deficit your body will have to 'find' some energy from somewhere.
(4) It will find it on your ass (or close by).
(5) If you are in energy deficit of 500 calories per day (a coke and a cookie), you'll lose about one pound (0.4kg) of fat per week.

Not complicated at all.

Yes, there's a little more to it and a few other variables, but for the vast majority of us our key weight loss/management strategy should be to put less food in our mouth and move our body more.
Full stop.

Yet we continue to find new and exciting ways to complicate the process.
In all areas of our lives.

While the above information is more than enough 'science' to get most of us in shape or at least well on the way, we (we the society) continue to ignore the obvious (the simple) and keep trying to re-invent the 'weight-loss wheel'.

Forget the ab-blaster 7000, the fat-melting tabs, the liver-heart-kidney-pancreas-and-lung cleansing diets, the electrodey (yep, a word) things you stick on yer body... and yer high-carb, low-carb, no-carb debate and simply eat less crap.

Too simple perhaps.
I dunno.

We also complicate things when it comes to relationships and communication.
Spending our lives not saying what we really think.
Not being honest.
Not dealing with problems.
Not making decisions.

Not being accountable or responsible.
Complicating relationships and situations by putting our head in the sand and not doing the simple.

A friend of mine always says:

"Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow...."

His life is a disaster.

Ultimately we waste way too much time, talent, energy and life on issues which could have been resolved quickly, simply and effectively long ago. Then... when it all blows up (and it does) we 'react, cope and struggle' for months or years dealing with something that should be a distant memory.

Recently I was talking with a friend of mine (yes, I have one) at a social event when another friend (alright, two) came up to chat.

"Hey Craig.... we're all planning a four-day hike at Cradle Mountain over Christmas... are you up for it?"
"Nup.."
"Why not.."
"Don't wanna.."
"How come..."
"Well, I love you all... but I don't wanna spend my Christmas eating re-hydrated food and sleeping in tents with ten stinky people."
"Okay, lemme know if you change yer mind."
"Okay, see ya."

The hiking guy walked away and my other friend (a girl) turned and said:
"How can you say that?"
"What, the truth?"
"Aren't you scared you'll offend them?"
"It's not about them... it's about how I want to spend my Christmas."

"I like them, I just have no desire to go hiking."

"But if it was a cheese-cake eating festival..... "

We all do the 'complication thing' don't we?
I still do it... but not so often these days.
It's kinda liberating when you just deal with stuff then and there.
Do what needs to be done.
Simply, quickly, effectively.

Still being sensitive and caring towards others, of course... but choosing not to go the long way around.
Choosing not to complicate.

Some people need to take a five minute trip... but they constantly choose to go via Anchorage.
By foot.
(Do I have any readers in Alaska?)

People always say to me....

"I wish I'd embraced this mindset years ago.. my life would be completely different today.."

So why don't you stop complicating your life today?
Or perhaps you could think about it for a bit longer.

If You Don't Know Where to Turn for Your Weight Loss

Fad diets are very popular these days; they promise quick weight loss results and claim to be safe and healthy. There are hundreds of different diets posted on the web and if you're one of those people looking to drop a few pounds, you might not know all the details about these "fad" diets. The following is some of those diets, how they work, and how effective they might be.

One popular diet fad most people have heard about is the Atkins Diet. This diet works on the theory that if you consume a lower amount of carbohydrates, you'll lose a large amount of weight in less time than most other diets.

With this diet you will also lose important vitamins and nutrients you need to stay healthy and energetic. Carbs are what give you energy; a very important part of your diet. Eliminating them can cause serious side effects.

The "Medifast Diet" centers on eating one specific type of food and eliminating all others. This is quite harmful because it is the variety of food that gives you the nutrition you need to stay healthy. Subscribers to this diet usually have the specific type of food mailed to them, which can be quite expensive and generally includes two weeks' worth of food.

A very popular and highly endorsed diet is the "Nutrisystem Diet". A professional dietician decides which meals are best suited for you for the of weight loss you are looking for. These are very effective diets but you have to remember, you can figure out yourself or with your doctor's help, how to eat and lose weight. It just takes a little more effort on your part, but you will save money.

Another low carbohydrate type of diet is called the "South Beach Diet"; similar to the Atkins Diet, which eliminates carbs and promises fast weight loss. These are pre-packaged types of diets and are sold at the grocery store. Like the Atkins, it is not suggested you remove the intake of carbohydrates from your diet; it can lead to health problems

The "Slim-Fast Diet" has been on the market for a long time. You had the mixture to low or slim fat milk, however, the name is deceiving; "fast"; you shouldn't expect this diet to work if you need to fit into a dress in two weeks.

These are only but a very few of the hundreds of different fads diets on the market. Before you decide to go on any diet, it is best to consult your doctor as to how much weight you need to lose and get his advice on the safest method of doing so. With any diet, you must exercise for best results; this increases your metabolism and helps you to burn stored fat, which is how you lose weight.

I lost 40 lbs in 3 months with extreme dieting measures that almost destroyed my health. Spicy food + lots of milk that lead to serious diarrhea every day. I've been doing a bit of research after my dramatic weight loss experience and found that there's actually a PROGRAM designed to do what I attempted, except its basically more healthier and effective.

You can find that specific program at Weight Loss Insider. I recommend you take a look at this Weight Loss Programs and see what they have to say about what you should do to lose 40lbs in 3 months healthily!

Safe Weight Loss Products

Safe weight loss products do exist, it is just a little harder to come across the ones that have the backing of sound science and real world results. Most companies manufacture products that are little more then over stimulated, and over caffenated pills. These crash and burn diets not only put a strain on your heart and body, but give you no sustainable weight loss. So if your feeling frustrated with your weight loss, it is more then safe to say that you are not alone.

The weight loss industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and with the pathetic fast food stops that we refer to as our diets popping up everywhere; there is no slow down in sight. In order to truly manage your weight you have to envision a lifestyle change. Any one can lose weight, but very few people can keep off that weight, why do you suppose that is? Most people tend to believe that it is there bodies that they must change, but the truth is that it is their mental projection of themselves that needs revamping. People lack discipline to let their minds control what they put into their bodies, instead most allow their bodies to dictate what their eating habits are. Of course there are countless cases where genetics play a huge role, but most simply lack the commitment to transform their bodies.

In order to facilitate your weight loss goals, you should follow a regimen of moderate exercise at least three times a week in conjunction with a diet plan. In terms of excercise, anything that gets your heart pumping, and lungs working for at least 30 minutes is fine. Your health should always be first priority, so never attempt a marathon session out of the gate.

As i stated earlier, what good is it to get on a crash diet only to harm your body and have the weight pile back on you. Invest in safe weight loss products that aid your body in your fitness goals, not ones that shock you into weight loss.

Our bodies are amazingly complex machines, so it is wise to use a product that is grounded in science and tested clinically in controlled environments. A key ingredient of a healthy diet consists of fats, not the double dipped trans fats we are used to, but instead healthy unsaturated fats. Make sure your are supplementing this.

If you are serious about loosing weight safely, then you should definitely do your research before investing your money. Make sure to validate any claims made by people, as most are little more then just air brushed pictures. You have a lot to lose in terms of your health, so do your homework.

Start losing sustained, healthy weight safely. Take it from real world results and someone who tried 62 different weight loss programs and lost a total of 191 pounds.

The Sumo Wrestler's Diet

Having trouble losing weight these days?

What if I were to tell you that it is because you are on the ‘Sumo Wrestler Diet?’
Hey, considering all of the bizarre methods out there it would not surprise me to find out that there was such a thing.

Oh, but there is and the bad news is that you may be on it without even knowing!
Let me tell you what you need to do in order to take advantage of this incredible new diet:

First of all, we need to slow down your metabolism as much as possible. A slower metabolism will ensure weight gain, but also make it difficult to lose weight. To accomplish this we are going to eat only twice a day. Each meal will consist of very large portions of high glycemic foods: Potatoes, Candy, cookies, juices or soda with high sugar content, white pastas, anything with white or processed flour, white rice, or sweet snacks.

Now we need to make sure that you do not eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast is a great way to make sure that your metabolism gets up only enough steam to get you out of bed. Remember, we do not want to burn off any fat or your opponents will plow right over you.

Second, it is important that the second meal of the day is as close to bedtime as possible. This will ensure that your body will not burn the calories consumed at the end of the day. Instead it will store them as large fat deposits which will make you unstoppable in the ring!

Now in order to avoid potential lawsuits I am required to disclose the potential side effects of this diet so here we go:

Fatigue
Inability to focus for long periods of time
Low blood sugar, leading to moodiness, irritability and headaches
Intestinal bloating and gas
Increased blood pressure and triglyceride levels which could lead to heart disease or diabetes.
Sleepiness after large meals
Depression

Now don’t let these bother you. Remember the objective is to make sure that your metabolism is too slow to burn up more energy than you eat. And remember, you are what you eat! Just follow this simple plan and you will be in the ring ‘throwing down’ in no time.
Good luck!

Does any of this sound familiar?
You see, I realize that you do not want to be overweight. I know that you deserve better. You know that you deserve better. We both know that those who love you deserve to have you happy and healthy for many years to come. However, good intentions are not always enough.

Nor is motivation or discipline.

You also need to have the right game plan. Without this you could be working very hard to change something and end up very frustrated because you are not getting the results that you are after.

Well, I have good news for you:
There is something you can do about your metabolism. You see, what I didn’t tell you about the sumo wrestler diet is that it causes your body to produce high levels of insulin.

High insulin levels cause your body to slow its metabolism and to store extra energy as fat. It also causes you to crave sugar and increases your appetite. This continues in a vicious cycle: higher insulin levels, more eating, more weight gain, more craving, more eating, more weight gain, more craving…on and on and on.

The good news is that your eating habits can also be used to increase your metabolism. Having a higher metabolism will increase your energy level, enhance your concentration, regulate your moods, cause you to sleep more peacefully and cut back dramatically on food cravings.

It’s a total win-win.

So now that you know this, here is the question:

What are you going to do about it?

The Best Way to Lose Weight before Summer

To make good impression on the beach, it is unnecessary to use the last-moment diet, for fasting, for racing the week before leaving. Or better, maybe you will get some results, but after a few weeks you will be back to square one, if not even a little fatter. To keep fit is necessary to train all year round, no need to kill yourself the last weeks before leaving for the holidays. A workout based on your skills and that increases over time is much more effective. And do not even need to register and pay the expensive gym fees for months and months. You can also create your home gym and use it when and how you want.

One of the most innovative accessories and more fun are the elastic trampolines. They were once used only by children, but now they are larger and more resistant, and are also an excellent exercise for adults. The trampolines have been modified to be used all year round, they are made of a special plastic fabric that allows water passing through it and it dries more quickly. Simple, dynamic, easy to use, small and (not least) at accessible price. These are the basic characteristics of the most fashionable desire for lovers of fitness. The trampoline is an aerobic activity that improves the work of the heart and the agility of the body. Jumping is also a work of defining on the muscles of the abdomen, thigh and hips. All this, without the joints of the knees and ankles being stressed.

To exercise there are so many methods, just find what you like most. How can we forget bicycles? Whether they are bicycles or exercise bike, this is certainly one of the best exercises and more used to get rid of the excess fat on thighs, hips, buttocks and legs.

If you lack the time, you can use some little tricks, like going to work by bike instead of by care. This will greatly help your physical and also will benefit the environment.

Another good exercise is running, that never passes out of fashion, but it is important to choose the most suitable routes, away from busy roads. Or you can subscribe to any course of aerobics, step, GAG, fit boxes, tone up and many else. This type of endurance exercise burns fat and oxygen, improves the strength and the muscular endurance, increase the elasticity and develops muscular coordination.

For those who do not want to give up the aesthetic treatments, the most modern is the cavitation. Aesthetic cavitation is a product of an advanced technology for the reduction of localized fat and cellulite. This method uses low frequency ultrasound (usually from 20 to 60 KHz) in order to reach the adipose tissue. So you can get a gradual disintegration of fat cells and consequently a reduction in the volume of adipose tissue. Apart from the beauty centers, you can find these devices for home use, buying them in shops and specialized websites.

Honey and Cinnamon for Weight Loss

The health benefits of herbs, spices and other natural products have been well known since ancient times. They have been found to contain substances that are useful in fighting diseases of the heart, regulating blood pressure, fighting skin problems, anxiety and stress. As these natural foods do not have any side effects, a lot of scientific research is being done at present to unravel their healing properties. More and more people are resorting to these natural ways of curing ailments. Of the various natural products and spices, honey and cinnamon have been found to be useful in the process of weight loss.

Role of Honey in Weight Loss
It is true that honey is a type of sugar. However, while the dietary sugars have only carbohydrates, honey, a natural sweetener, has vitamins and minerals as well. When our body digests sugar, it uses the vitamins and minerals present in our tissues. Hence, in the process of digesting dietary sugar, a deficit of vitamins and minerals is created in our body. This deficit is not created when honey is digested, as besides being a rich source carbohydrates, honey also provides important vitamins and minerals to the body. Hence, the metabolism of fats and cholesterol remains unhindered when dietary sugars are replaced with honey. Honey also helps in digestion, and taking this natural sweetener after a heavy meal helps in avoiding any problems that may arise due to overeating.

Role of Cinnamon in Weight Loss
Intake of cinnamon in the form of powder or sticks can be useful in controlling cholesterol levels in the body. While it lowers the amount of bad cholesterol, it leaves the good cholesterol at the same level. Cinnamon also regulates blood sugar levels and helps in the fight against obesity and insulin resistance. Cinnamon is very useful for patients suffering from diabetes, as it helps them in using less insulin.

Honey and Cinnamon Recipe for Weight Loss
Take one spoonful of honey, one spoonful of cinnamon powder and mix them in a cup of warm water. This concoction should be consumed every morning on an empty stomach. Although the actual mechanism of how this recipe helps in losing weight naturally is not clearly known, people have reported to have benefited from regular consumption of this mixture.

Honey Recipes for Weight Loss

Honey and Warm Water
Drinking a cup of warm water with one spoon of honey in it every morning is believed to help in weight loss. Fat remains stored as an unused source of energy in our tissues. Honey is believed to mobilize this stored fat that is burnt up to provide energy for our daily activities. This results in gradual loss of weight.

Honey and Lemon
One spoon of honey with a few drops of lemon, mixed with warm water is another recipe made from honey that is believed to reduce one's weight. Although the results are slow, regular consumption of this mixture is believed to aid in weight loss.

Besides helping in weight loss, honey and cinnamon have other health benefits like fighting heart diseases, improving digestion, purifying blood and improving blood circulation. All these health factors and obesity are interrelated. Hence, not only do honey and cinnamon help in weight loss, but they also ensure an overall well being of an individual.

There are a lot of natural remedies of fighting weight gain. However, unless one ensures a balanced diet and regular exercise, the effects of these organic products will be in vain.

What Does Your Body Fat Percentage Mean?

Possibly, you have heard the term but do not really understand it. What does your body fat percentage mean? Essentially, it is an estimate of the fraction of the total body mass that is fat mass, or adipose tissue rather than lean body mass such as muscle, bone, organ tissue, blood and all the rest. Lean body mass also goes under the name of fat free mass. Keeping track of your body fat percentage helps you to monitor your progress during a diet. It also serves as a measure of physical fitness for sports like bodybuilding.

As a measure of excess body weight, one’s body fat percentage is far more reliable than one’s body mass index (BMI). This is because body fat percentage makes a distinction between the weight of muscle mass and that of the fat mass. BMI, on the other hand, simply groups all masses and gives a single figure. Despite its accuracy, measurement of body fat percentage is not as widely used as BMI. The reason is that measuring body fat percentage calls for equipment that is not always readily accessible. In addition, there is always a margin of error, even if a qualified person performs the measurement process.

Total body fat percentage comprises of fat essential to the metabolism as well as stored fat. Essential fat is indispensable in terms of maintaining life and reproductive functions of the body. The essential body fat percentage is greater for women than that for men because their bodies have to deal with the demands of childbearing and other hormonal functions. According to the accepted norms, essential fat is 2-5% for men and 10-13% for women. The minimum total body fat percentage recommended by medical professionals is more than this essential fat percentage. Storage fat refers to the fat accumulation in adipose tissue. Some of the adipose tissue is essential for protecting internal organs in the chest and abdomen and it is slightly higher for women than for men.

There are various methods for measuring body fat percentage. However, the two most poplar methods are the skin-fold method and the height-circumference method. In the skin-fold method, the tester measures a pinch of skin with special calipers at several standardized points on the body. In this way, one can determine the layer thickness of the subcutaneous fat (fat below the skin). The tester then converts these measurements to an estimated body fat percentage with the help of an equation. Depending on the formula employed, the tester may take as few as three measurements or as many as seven.

The accuracy of these estimates depends more on the tested person’s unique body fat distribution rather than on how many sites the tester measures. While using this method of measuring body fat percentage, the tester must ensure that he uses a fixed pressure in very specific locations. The skin-fold method is quite reliable as a measure of body composition changes over a certain period, even though it may not give an accurate reading of actual body fat percentage. In the skin-fold method to estimate body fat percentage, a lot depends on the type of caliper used as well as on the technique. It applies to only subcutaneous adipose tissue.

The formula used in the height and circumference method of measuring body fat percentage takes into account an individual’s weight and girth measurements. There are several variations, one of which is the U.S. Navy Circumference method. This method compares abdomen or waist and hips measurements to neck measurement and height a well as other areas. The tester then converts the findings to the body mass index to estimate the body fat percentage. In the variant used in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, the tester measures the neck and waist just above the naval in the case of males and the hips, waist, and neck in the case of females. He then compares these measurements with a height/weight chart, factoring in the subject’s age.

This is a preferred method because it is a cheap and convenient means. However, it is subject to possible inaccuracy because the subject can cheat on it by holding in the stomach or flaring out the neck to enlarge these areas.

Consume foods that contain essential fatty acids and avoid the consumption of saturated fats. Moreover, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Decrease the calorie supply to your body. Stay away from fast food, as it won't do anything good to you, rather it would keep on contributing to the fat content of your body. Sudden Weight Loss Causes

The prospect of losing weight is actually quite welcoming for many people. Though it is a good thing to lose weight with proper diet and exercises, losing weight suddenly without even trying for it should be taken as a matter of serious concern. This is because sudden weight loss is a symptom of a variety of health problems and serious diseases. Hence, it is important to diagnose sudden weight loss causes, if someone is experiencing extreme weight loss. This is necessary because earlier the cause of sudden weight loss is found, earlier the treatment can be started. Therefore, rather than been happy about losing the extra pounds without exercising or giving up on your favorite foods, consult your health practitioner as it can be a sign of something serious.

Sudden Weight Loss - Reasons

Weight loss occurs when the body loses its muscle mass, fluids or the fat it accumulates. Though dieting can help a person in losing weight considerably, experiencing rapid weight loss i.e. losing 5% of body weight in a year or less than that can be a serious issue. Therefore, let us take a look at some of the causes of sudden weight loss.

Eating Disorders
One thing that most of us know is that our body weight is proportionate with the food we eat. When we follow a balanced diet, it is obvious that our weight will be at an average level. So, when we stop eating, our weight will also come down. This is a common condition among people who suffer from eating disorders, especially anorexia and bulimia. Anorexia nervosa can be defined as a mental disorder where a person has extreme fear of putting on weight and hence, restricts his food intake to very little, and becomes thin. On the other hand, bulimia nervosa is when the person indulges in binge eating and later throws up or indulges in strenuous exercises to control putting on weight. Both these eating disorders are major causes of sudden weight loss and should be treated quickly as these can turn life threatening, especially anorexia, which is very common among teenage girls.

Mental Health Problems
Sudden weight loss can be attributed to mental health problems like stress and anxiety. In today's busy world, stress can be caused by variety of situations related to work and personal life. If people fail to get out from the stressful situations, their anxiety may lead to physical symptoms like rapid weight loss along with rapid breathing, dizziness, chest pain and shortness of breath. Apart from stress and anxiety, weight loss can also be caused by a person suffering from depression. Depression is when a person feels sad and anxious all the time due to certain psychological, environmental or genetic factors. Many times, when a person has depression, he or she may have a very low appetite and may suffer from digestive problems. This can lead to sudden weight loss.

Cancer
Cancer, a life threatening disease can also be one the sudden weight loss causes. With any type of cancer, be it leukemia, pancreatic, lung cancer, etc., losing weight suddenly as well as rapidly is seen as a common symptom. This happens because the cancerous tumors present in the body increases the body's metabolism due of which the body is able to burn the calories faster, thus giving rise to excess weight loss. Some people may also experience sudden weight loss while undergoing a treatment for cancer.

Chronic Diarrhea
Diarrhea is something that most people have experienced due to eating the wrong type of food or due to a viral infection called gastroenteritis. Though such type of diarrhea can be treated with antibiotics, people who suffer from diarrhea for more than four weeks are said to have chronic diarrhea. This can be caused due to some serious disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. When an individual has diarrhea for more than four weeks, sudden weight loss is likely to occur.

Diabetes
Though diabetes can also be one of the causes of sudden weight loss, it is more commonly seen in Type I diabetes than in Type II diabetes. Type I diabetes is seen in young children, teenagers and adults under the age of 30 and occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin to carry glucose formed in the body to the cells. Glucose is the main factor that gives our body the energy to function properly and when the cells do not receive this, glucose is released into the bloodstream, making a person diabetic. As the body does not receive enough energy, sudden weight loss is likely to occur, along with some other symptoms too.

Other Causes of Sudden Weight Loss
Apart from these diseases, sudden weight loss can also occur due to other diseases like AIDS, hyperthyroidism, arthritis, GERD, tuberculosis, kidney failure, lung problems, etc. Also, age is an important factor that is associated with rapid and sudden weight loss. Other than this, problems like drug abuse, laxative abuse, malnutrition, Parkinson's disease and bowel obstruction can also cause sudden weight loss.

Treatment for Sudden Weight Loss

The appropriate treatment for sudden weight loss will depend on the cause that gave rise to this problem. Hence, if you have lost too much weight suddenly, do not delay in consulting the doctor who can diagnose the root cause of the problem according to other symptoms that accompany weight loss and also by conducting some physical tests. Other things necessary to treat sudden weight loss are, following a well balanced diet, regular exercises and of course, ample amount of rest. You can discuss these factors with your health practitioner, as he will be able to give you the right guidance.

As you now know about the sudden weight loss causes, you must have definitely realized the severity of losing weight rapidly without trying to do so. Hence, I hope you will take this seriously and visit the doctor to bring back your lost weight and also to prevent further complications.

How to Become Skinny

So you're a size 3 or 4, but you're dying to become a size zero. It's possible. Why not? Like the normal pattern for weight loss, becoming skinny also requires a good diet, combined with several exercises, in an organized fashion for a stipulated time period. Also, a detoxification process is important, to clear the body of all unnecessary toxins, that may hinder the process of weight loss. While it is important for you to become skinny, it is also important to be able to maintain a skinny figure. Let's find out how to become skinny, and fast!

How to Become Skinny Fast

You may have successfully shed those extra kilos, but it's the last few ones that are causing the trouble. To be able to become skinny fast, you need to go that extra mile, and get yourself to the size you have always coveted. The following procedure will tell you how to become skinny fast.

Commit Yourself
The first and most important step in becoming skinny is to be committed to your goal. Nothing works better than a strong commitment and desire to achieve what you want. Commitment will guide you towards working hard, and give you a sense of direction towards becoming skinny.

For the Love of Your Body - EAT!
Now you may have heard this often, perhaps a million times before, but skipping meals and starving is not the answer to becoming skinny. You have to eat the right thing at the right time, and most importantly, more than three times a day, to be able to lose weight, yet maintain your metabolism. Starving will lower your metabolic rate, and cause you to feel grouchy and lethargic, not to mention the regular headache that accompanies the process of becoming skinny. Also, say bye-bye to your skinny figure when you resume your normal eating pattern again, as once the body gets used to starving, it takes longer to burn fats that are consumed later.

The logic is simple, your body adapts itself to burn the number of calories you eat in a day. So the lesser you eat, the lesser it will burn, and vice versa. The only important thing to remember here is to avoid carbohydrates in the latter half of the day, say after 5 pm, as it is difficult for the body to burn them at that time. Think about it. As ironic as it may sound, eating right is actually an answer to how to become skinny.

Purify your System
The detoxification process will actually help you with how to become skinny like a model. As mentioned earlier, a colon cleanse diet will flush out all the toxins that hold the fat in the body, and that may be holding you back from getting to the finish line! Eat these foods in various combinations, for one week to detox your body. Do not overeat, but have small portions spread over 6 meals throughout the day, and preferably before 7 pm.

    * Eggs, Garlic and Onions
    * Parsley, Collards, Cilantro, Kale and Watercress
    * Beets, Whey, Celery, Artichokes and Asparagus
    * Lemons, Lime Juice and Oranges
    * Berries, Apples, Carrots and Pear
    * Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts
    * Only use flax seed or olive oil for dressing or cooking.
    * Eat a handful of protein rich nuts daily.

Drink lots of water in a day, as it greatly helps the detoxification process. Avoid sugar, caffeine and alcohol. A good alternative for caffeine is green tea and ginger tea. Eat as much organic food as possible. Also, try to consume foods with negative calories. Refer to the negative calorie food list for more information.

You Already Know It - EXERCISE!
Whether you're trying to become skinny or not, exercising on a regular basis is as important as eating or breathing. You need not necessarily enroll yourself in a gym. Just engage in any physical activity or sport you like, such as tennis, dance, badminton, kick-boxing, etc. What is important here is the regularity of the exercise routine you follow. Commit yourself to a minimum of 3 days a week of exercise, for at least one hour. If you find it boring to exercise alone, team up with a buddy and give your body the much-needed exercise to become skinny.
