What Causes Femoral Hernia

You might have heard about hernia being a condition in which an organ or fatty tissues contained in a bodily cavity protrudes through a weak spot in the wall of that cavity. There are many different types of hernia, but, the most common location that is prone to hernia is the abdomen. So, commonly hernias are like lumps that develop on the abdominal and groin area. This does not mean that hernia develops in these regions only. For example, hiatal hernia develops when the upper part of the stomach protrudes into the chest cavity, through the esophageal opening. Spinal hernias are also not uncommon. So, abdominal hernias are the most common one and this may be due to the fact that various medical conditions are found to increase the pressure inside the abdominal cavity, paving a way to weakening of the cavity wall and hernias. Femoral hernias are one among the different abdominal hernia types. Continue reading this article for some information about what causes femoral hernia.

What is Femoral Hernia

Femoral hernia is a type of abdominal hernia that is uncommon, as compared to inguinal ones. As mentioned earlier, an abdominal hernia is a protrusion or lump that develops from the abdomen, when a part of an organ or fatty tissues squeeze out through a weak spot in the wall of the abdominal cavity. In case of a femoral hernia, such a bulge or lump is found to develop below the leg crease, where the thighs meet the torso. The most common abdominal hernias called inguinal hernias are found to develop in the groin area, especially, from the inguinal region just above the leg crease. As both these hernia types are found to develop in nearby regions, it may get difficult to distinguish them. However, femoral hernias are found to be somewhat round in shape, as compared to inguinal ones and the former is mainly found in women, especially, the middle-aged and older members.

In case of femoral hernia, the abdominal contents are found to protrude through the femoral canal, which is the pathway through which the femoral artery, vein, and nerve travel from the abdomen to the thigh. Such protrusions are found as bulges on the thigh, just below the leg crease. This canal is normally found to be too tight, to allow the intestinal contents to protrude through it. Unlike most of the other hernia types, femoral hernias are mostly irreversible (returned to normal state) and are associated with high risks of strangulation (blockage of blood supply to the protruded part). If left untreated, these hernias may lead to complication, like strangulation, which is an emergency condition that requires immediate medical attention.

Femoral Hernia Causes and Symptoms

So, the basic cause of a femoral hernia is the weakness at the femoral canal, through which the abdominal contents (usually the intestines) protrude. Such a weakening can be caused by various factors. This includes aging, excess strain on the abdominal wall in this area, obesity, etc. This condition may also be congenital in some people. Excess strain on the abdomen is a common cause for femoral hernia and the contributory factors are heavy weight lifting, incessant cough, constipation, strenuous physical activities and straining to urinate. Women are said to be more prone to develop femoral hernias and it may be due to the wider bone structure in the female pelvis. Even pregnancy is considered as a contributory factor for development of hernia in women.

While some of the minor femoral hernias do not cause any symptoms, some others are characterized by a lump or bulge located on the inner thigh, below the leg crease. The lump may disappear in supine position. The size of the lump may increase or decrease as per pressure variations inside the intestines. Some of the affected people may have utter discomfort and pain. Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting may also develop in some patients. Apart from the above said ones, hernia symptoms in women include intense menstrual cramps. In some severe cases of femoral hernia, the menstrual flow may also get altered.

Femoral Hernia Repair

Diagnosis of femoral hernia is made with the help of physical examinations and tests like CT scanning and ultrasound. As it is a condition that is not found to subside on its own and may also cause complications, treatment is inevitable for femoral hernia. In minor cases, a doctor may adopt a wait and watch policy. In some cases, the hernia may get strangulated, or lead to peritonitis, perforation of the intestine and gangrene, causing severe symptoms. These are emergency conditions that require immediate treatment. In most cases, surgical repair is the treatment for femoral hernia. The protruded part is pushed back to its normal position and the weak spot (through which the protrusion happened) is sutured.

Now, you have a fair idea about what causes femoral hernia and what are the symptoms and treatment for the condition. This article is purely for informational purposes and so, if you develop any such bulge or other related symptoms, you have to contact your doctor and get it diagnosed and treated at the earliest.

Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery

For any disease or medical complication, we try our level best to keep the treatment minimal and safe. Talking about hernia surgeries, let us understand in short what is hernia first. It basically is a defect in the abdominal wall. This defect is caused when the inner abdominal muscle layers are damaged and are weak, that result in a bulge or a tear. The inner tissues of the abdomen that are weak, are pushed by the inner lining of the abdomen, which causes a bulge, or a balloon like formation in the the weakened section. This balloon like sac is called hernia. There are many causes of hernia, and can happen to men and women alike, at any age. Factors like strain to the abdomen, difficult bowel movements, urination, and age, can cause stress on the abdominal walls, and hence cause hernia. It can also also be a heredity disorder. Hernia causes severe pain, leading to serious complications, if not treated. The basic treatment for hernia does not begin with medicines and drugs, only surgery can treat hernia. Though a hernia belt, that suppresses the bulge is used, but is not effective in most cases. Let us check the surgical options that are used to treat hernia, and understand in some detail about minimally invasive hernia surgery, that is also called laparoscopic hernia surgery.

Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery

Hernia, if not treated on time, causes further complications like intestinal incarceration and strangulation. Hernia grows without treatment, and the larger it grows, it creates more complications. Though, an exception of close monitoring can be made for those with serious surgical issues like bleeding, heart disease, lung disease, etc. In severe hernia cases, one cannot consider even these exceptions. An open surgery is one option for hernia repair, however, many doctors opt for a laparoscopic hernia repair.

Minimally Invasive Hernia Surgery Procedure

This surgery uses a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a small-lighted scope that has a camera connected to it through a cannula. In this procedure, general anesthesia is given to the patient. A small incision is made in the abdomen near the navel or in the navel. The laparoscope is inserted through this incision. The abdomen is inflated so that the surgeon can properly view the internal parts of the abdomen. A harmless gas like carbon dioxide is used in inflation. A mesh is placed before the abdominal lining area that is weakened in the abdominal wall. Once securely placed before the hernia, it is stapled with surgical staples. The abdominal incisions are then closed with stitches.

Minimally Invasive Surgery – Advantages

Most doctors will insist on this type of surgery, as there are many factors that make this surgery relatively safe, than an open surgery.

    * The surgery is comparatively safe, and is less painful and traumatic. Hernia surgery recovery time is less with a laparoscopic procedure, and lets one resume daily activities soon.
    * There are two or three small incisions that are barely visible, as compared to one large incision that an open surgery demands.
    * The surgery gives an option to diagnose and also repair if there is any other hernia on the opposite side of the abdomen.
    * Low post surgery pain and low costs of the surgery are big advantages of minimally invasive surgery.

Hernia Surgery Recovery and Cost

A close monitoring will be followed after the surgery. Within a few hours after you recover from the anesthesia and after gaining control on walking and moving around, you will be discharged from the hospital. With a successful surgery and no serious complications post surgery, the expected laparoscopic hernia recovery time is around 3 days . One can start with his daily routine in two to three days after the surgery. Hernia surgery cost will depend on the age, gender, complications in the surgery, and also on the location. The average laparoscopic hernia repair cost can be anything between $5000 - $14,000. However, the costs may go higher in certain hospitals, depending on the location and state.

Risk Factors for Minimally Invasive Surgery

Factors like obesity, and any previous abdominal surgery complications, will not allow the physician to suggest a minimally invasive surgery for hernia repair. Infections and bleeding, and scar tissue formation, are most common risks after the surgery. Injuries to the other organs like the urinary bladder, nerves, blood vessels, intestines, etc., may also happen. A possibility of hernia recurrence is one factor. Others like thigh numbness and pain can also be experienced.

Minimally invasive hernia repair is suggested in most hernia cases. However, your surgeon will be able to check and then decide if you can be operated upon with this procedure, as people with certain issues may require to take special precautions during and after the surgery. Post surgery, if the patient experiences high fever, bleeding, constant nausea, vomiting, inability to eat or drink, prolonged pain and breathlessness, the surgeon should be immediately informed to take further action.

Hernia is a serious issue and needs proper and careful treatment. Make sure you study and discuss all the possibilities before you opt for any surgery. Rest all, keep a positive view and take intensive care for a healthy recovery.

Hernia Mesh

Hernia is a medical condition that is most often corrected through surgery. In some cases, surgical repair of hernia involves use of a hernia mesh. What is a hernia mesh and why is it used in repairing a hernia? In order to understand the use of a hernia mesh in hernia surgery, you must have a basic idea about the nature of this medical condition and the role of surgery in correcting it. This article will provide you with some information about hernia mesh.

Hernia and Hernia Surgery

Hernia is a medical condition that is most commonly found to affect the abdomen. It is caused by weakening of the muscles and tissues of the abdominal region, thereby causing the inner organs or tissues to protrude out. Such protrusion is often found as bulges or lumps over the affected area. There are different types of abdominal hernias like, inguinal, femoral, diaphragmatic, umbilical and incisional. The classification is based on the location and cause of hernia. In simple words, an abdominal hernia can be described as the protrusion of an inner organ through a weak spot on the wall of the abdominal cavity. The common type of abdominal hernia is the inguinal hernia, which is found in the inguinal region, just above the leg crease.

In most cases, hernia is treated with surgery, except those minor cases in which wait and watch policy may be adopted sometimes. Surgical repair of hernia involves restoration of the normal position of the protruded part and mending the weak spot. In some cases, the protruded part has to be removed for various reasons, before suturing the incision. Mostly, parts of intestine are found to be involved in hernias. In some cases, a hernia mesh is used to mend the weak spot. What is this hernia mesh and why is it used for repair of hernia? Let us find out.

What is Hernia Mesh?

As mentioned above, hernia is caused by the weakening of tissues in the abdominal wall, forming a weak spot. Surgery is basically necessary for repairing the weak spot. But in some cases sutures used during the surgery may further weaken the already weakened spot. This may lead to recurrence of the condition. So a mesh is used to mend the weak spot, so as to reinforce the weakened tissues. The mesh is placed over or under the weakened tissues and is attached to the stronger muscles located around it. Even mesh plugs are found to be used to fill the opening through which the protrusion happens. In this case, suturing or stapling is not required.

Such mesh is not usually used in pediatric hernia repair. Generally, hernia mesh is found to be made of polypropylene. It is like a thin woven piece of polypropylene that comes in various types. So different types of hernia mesh may be used, as per individual requirements. Nowadays, hernia mesh made of human dermis is also available. Apart from reinforcing the weakened muscles and tissues, the hernia mesh also facilitates growth of new tissues that will cover the area, thereby incorporating the mesh.

Hernia Mesh Complications

Use of hernia mesh in surgeries is now a controversial matter, as there are numerous reports about complications caused by this mesh. In some cases, the body fails to get adjusted to the mesh, thereby causing pain and swelling. Even infection of the site is said to be common with the use of surgical mesh. Another complication is associated with the use of faulty mesh. Injury to the blood vessels, nerves and organs near the mesh may also develop. In such cases, the patient may develop bleeding, problem with urination, infertility, etc. It has also been reported that hernia recurrence is one of the common complications associated with the use of this mesh. There are reports about breakage of mesh, inside the cavity, causing various complications like, bowel perforation, strangulation of intestines, damage to other organs and fistulas. In case of hernia mesh complications, surgery has to be done again to remove the mesh and correct the condition.

This was about hernia mesh, its use and the possible complications that may arise. Following the reports about complications associated with hernia mesh, various companies have recalled their faulty products from the market. However, if you have doubts regarding the use of mesh, make sure to discuss with your doctor. This is very important, if you are about to undergo a hernia repair.

Ventral Hernia

Our body has different organs to perform different tasks. They all are placed in their specific locations inside a cavity. In case of a hernia, the organ comes out of the cavity and starts pushing the muscular wall which can be seen as a protrusion. Ventral hernia is observed as a bulge through the weak abdominal muscles, or an opening in the abdominal wall. The bulge may be due to fat, tissue, or any organ like the intestine. Here, we will discuss about the types, causes, symptoms and treatments for this type of hernia.

Types of Ventral Hernia
Ventral hernia occurs in the abdominal area. There are basically three types of ventral hernia, based on their occurrence in the abdominal region. They are

    * Incisional Hernia: It is one of the most common among the three types, hence ventral hernia is also sometimes referred as incisional hernia. It is found at the place where the person has undergone a surgical cut.
    * Spigelian Hernia: It is observed on either side of the abdomen.
    * Epigastric Hernia: It is observed above the bellybutton.

Triggers of Ventral Hernia
There are many reasons which may trigger ventral hernia. Following are some of the most common causes.

    * Old surgeries are one of the most common causes of ventral hernia, as the abdominal wall gets weak and organs are able to push it easily. It can also be observed if the surgical wound gets infected, or if there are any blood clots.
    * Obesity can trigger ventral hernia as the fat makes it difficult to heal and muscles may get ruptured or pushed easily.
    * Hard or intense coughing may result in the tearing of stitches which may further lead to the occurrence of hernia.
    * Lack of proper nutrition and minerals may result in the improper blood flow to the area of surgery. This may prolong the time taken to heal the wound, and can cause hernia.
    * Age can also be a cause of hernia, as an old person's body takes more time to heal surgical wounds as compared to young or middle aged person.
    * Lifting heavy weights may put strain on your abdomen and may result in the tearing of the muscles at the surgical site.
    * Straining bowel at the time of constipation, or straining while urinating may also cause hernia.

Clinical Signs of Ventral Hernia
Ventral hernia symptoms like bulge and pain can sometimes be mistake as tumors which may create panic. Hence, if you observe such symptoms then get it diagnosed immediately. Following are some of the most commonly noticeable symptoms of ventral hernia.

    * One of the most common symptoms is pain. The patient may experience pain which can get severe if the organ gets trapped, and is unable to go back to its original cavity. Pain may also occur if the blood circulation in the trapped part stops, which may result in the death of organ tissues.
    * The organ comes out of the cavity, and is seen as a projected part over the abdominal wall.
    * Vomiting and nausea are very commonly observed in hernia patients.
    * The bulge can be seen more prominently at the time of laughing, straining, coughing and lifting something heavy.
    * Due to the obstruction in passing of the fecal material down to the rectum the patient may experience constipation.

Ventral Hernia Diagnostic Procedures
If you observe ventral hernia symptoms, then it is very important to get it diagnosed. Following are some of the diagnostic procedures which may be used in confirming ventral hernia.

    * An ultrasound test of the abdominal region may be conducted which may help to get a clear picture of the hernia.
    * A CT scan may be used to confirm the presence of hernia. This is also very helpful in finding out the size of the hernia and what is causing it.
    * Laparoscopy can also be used to find out the presence of ventral hernia. In this procedure the doctor will insert a small camera inside your stomach.

Treatment for Ventral Hernia
Once the hernia is diagnosed and confirmed, the doctor will advice you to undergo treatment. Hernia is mostly repaired or treated with the help of surgery. Two types of surgeries can be done in treating hernia: open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. In open surgery, the doctor will make cuts and open your abdomen where the hernia is located, will fix it and will stitch the skin back to its place. Where as in the laparoscopic surgery the doctor will use minimum invasive techniques and insert camera from one hole and a tool from the other one and will fix your hernia.

Proper guidelines and after care has to be followed for hernia treatment surgeries. The patient should follow all the instructions of the doctor. It is advisable to include fibrous food in the diet, drink lots of water and avoid stressful work to get rid of hernia problems.

Sports Hernia Surgery Recovery Time

When all the other treatments to relieve sports hernia injury are rendered useless, the physician may opt for surgery to correct the problem. Sports hernia, or athletic pubalgia, normally affects athletes, and is characterized by a tear in the oblique muscles in the abdominal region. The muscles may become weak and tear in the long run, if there is too much strain on them. The sacs can be felt on the abdominal region and may also trigger intense pain in the groin. On closer observation of the symptoms of sports hernia, the severity of the condition can be diagnosed. Men are more prone to sports hernia, when compared to women due to their anatomical make. Let us discuss about the surgical procedure and rehabilitation of sports hernia injury.

Sports Hernia Surgical Procedure

Sports hernia treatment options normally include rest, abstaining from any physical activity and restraining oneself from doing heavy work. Application of ice packs on the affected region, anti inflammatory drugs or compression shorts may be implemented to treat sports hernia. However, if these methods fail to provide the desired result, then the physician may opt for surgery. Earlier, open surgery was the only option to correct sports hernia. But thanks to the advancement in the medical field, this treatment method can now be carried out with a minimally invasive procedure without actually entering the body cavity. These days, surgeons use the laparoscopic method to correct this injury. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia, as per the choice of the individual. In this method a laparoscope is inserted into the body through a small incision to locate the exact site of the hernia. Meanwhile the entire procedure is monitored by the images displayed with the help of a camera (or endoscope) fitted to the laparoscope, projected on the computer monitor. After the hernia is located, the doctor may use suction to pull back the sac in its original place and the superficial nerve is also removed to prevent it from getting clogged in the scar tissue. A thin mesh is also inserted in the surgical site to stabilize the repair and support the inguinal canal. After this the incision is closed and sealed with a bandage, and medications are administered to avoid any kind of infection at the site of the surgical wound.

Recovering from a Sports Hernia Surgery

Once the surgery is over, the patient is transferred from the operation theater by a gurney and shifted to the ICU ward for closer observation. Following the laparoscopic surgery, the person may be require minimal hospitalization for up to four hours, in contrast to the traditional method where the person may have to stay in the hospital for four days. The patient is required to take ample rest for complete healing. Pain killers may be administered to the individual to help him combat with the pain after the surgery. There are also modifications in the diet and lifestyle to aid in the sports hernia surgery recovery. The patient is also advised against lifting overtly heavy things which may put pressure on the abdomen. Any pain or discomfort noticed should be reported immediately to the surgeon or a health care provider. Post surgery, the physician may also direct the person to undertake physical therapy, where he may be recommended exercise that will help strengthen the abdominal muscles. In the traditional open surgery method, the person would take anywhere between six to ten weeks to completely recover from the medical procedure. However, the recovery time for laparoscopic sports hernia surgery takes approximately four to six weeks.

Teamed with proper physical therapy, diet and medications, one can speed up the sports hernia surgery recovery time and the person can resume his normal routine. Additional efforts like exercise, including dietary fiber and staying hydrated will prevent the recurrence of this disorder.

What is Herniotomy

The hernia is a condition that causes an acute discomfort to people suffering from it. The surgical procedure which is used to cure and basically, rectify hernia is known as herniotomy. There are two things about hernia that all of us should know, one, in several cases there are no symptoms due to which the hernia is left undetected and two, in cases where it is left untreated or it reaches a certain level of severity, the organs involved may get damaged. Herniotomy is the surgical cure and also the only safest and recommended cure of hernia, to ensure that the organs are protected and the condition gets safely cured.

What is Hernia?

The human abdomen and the lower part of what we colloquially identify as 'stomach', is commonly known as the abdominal cavity. This cavity is particularly filled with the digestive system and urinary tract organs. In order to protect this cavity from frontal and sides, nature has mammals with peritoneum, which is basically a muscular membrane. This membrane covers all inter-abdominal areas, starting from the upper side of the liver and ending in the middle portion.

Hernia is a condition where in the internal organs of the body push themselves against this membrane or any other nearing muscles, and starts protruding from it. This forms up a bulge which progresses into a sac if the condition worsens. Now it is essential to return these protruding organs to their normal positions as they can harm the blood circulation and also the bodily functions of the abdomen. This can be done with the help of Herniotomy.

Another problem a patient may have to deal with is that hernia has very abstract symptoms such as pain and strain in the affected area. Chronic cough, smoking, lifting very heavy weights, Cystic fibrosis, extreme exertion, extreme strain and tension on the muscles and even extreme obesity can lead to hernia. Hernia is also usually detected through physical examination by a doctor and in some cases, an ultrasound is also used.

There are 5 prominent types of hernia, depending upon the places/locations where the protrusion can occur.

    * Hiatal hernia affects the upper part of the abdominal cavity.
    * Umbilical hernia occurs in the regions surrounding the belly button.
    * Inguinal hernia affects the region of the groin.
    * Femoral hernia occurs in uppermost section of the thighs, just below the groin.
    * Incisional hernia occurs due to an incompletely-healed surgical scars from a past surgery.

In all the cases, irrespective of the ailment, a Herniotomy is required as soon as possible, and there is no other alternative as the condition does not get cured on its own.

About Herniotomy

This herniotomy procedure is not life threatening and at least, in theory its straight forward. There are two types of Herniotomy surgeries which can be done, depending upon the surgeon's analysis of the condition.

Open Herniotomy
The basic premise is that a cut is made on the location above the affected area, and the surgeon opens up the muscular membrane, peritoneum. Following this, all the displaced organs are put back into their normal positions and the muscular membrane is carefully stitched up. This completes the surgical process, and the recovery begins. In this kind of surgery, the principle objective is to rectify the protrusion or bulge, and also heal the muscular membrane if damaged. It must be noted that irrespective of the location, the procedure followed is more or less the same. The usual simple hernia surgery recovery time period is about 4 weeks, that is one can get back to the normal routine (with less rigorous exercise and no extreme physical activity). Surgeons usually recommend that one starts walking as soon as possible. Now the time period for this often depends upon the scale of the hernia and the general physical condition of the person.

Herniotomy using Laparoscopy
In some cases, doctors use laparoscopy where a small tube and camera is used along with smaller, slimmer and more sophisticated surgical instruments to conduct the very same procedure. However instead of making a longer cut, 3-4 very small cuts are made in such a case. The 'wound' or the actual incision during this surgery is minor, which reduces the strain of the surgery on the body, and also curbs down the pain felt by the patient during the recover and helps in a over all faster recovery. Unfortunately, this form of hernia repair surgery costs more than the open surgery. The laparoscopy patients on the other hand, tend to recover with more speed, obviously owing to the fact that the 'cuts' made during the surgery are smaller and cures and heals quickly.

Note that there are some complications associated with hernia surgery which tend to affect the abdomen and groin if the hernia is note treated on time. I hope that you have the answer to 'what is herniotomy' and the options available.

Hernia Belt for Women

Hernia belts are devices that can be used to provide support to patients who have undergone a hernia surgery and can be also employed by those who are currently suffering from hernia. Hernia belts, also known as binders are trusses. Hernia pain relief is what you derive from the belts as they are absolutely comfortable and serve to be a great support rather than a hindrance in the normal functioning of an individual. In this article, we look at the functions of a hernia belt and what one must look for when buying a hernia belt. We also have a brief section dedicated to explicating as to how to wear a hernia belt.

Functions of Hernia Belts

A hernia belt is equipped with soft cushion like pads that can be adjusted and/or removed as per an individual's preference. The hernia belt helps the bulging or protruding section of the intestine that droops that looks like a lump formation through the abdominal wall. As mentioned, a hernia may droop and slip from their stipulated position. When this occurs, one may have to lay trust on an external gear that supports the bulge and the gradual stooping posture of the hernia. Hernia belts are made from comfortable and soft material that may have buckles, clips or fasteners that may allow you to adapt to the belts as per your comfort levels. The cushion like pads can be removed if one is not comfortable with the feel of them being inserted. You are free to manipulate the belt as far as you derive complete support.

It is required that one should be very clear about the functionality of hernia belts, being a support inducing wear and not a form of non-invasive cure for hernia. Hernia can occur in both men and women. However, there are no separate hernia belts for the two sexes as it depends on the type of hernia that one may endure. Surgery is the only way in which one may get rid of hernia. If, however hernia is prolonged, it may lead to a condition referred to as strangulated hernia. Though abdominal hernia's are not life threatening, a form called the strangulated hernia may indeed be a termed a misfit in the non-life-threatening category. In this form of hernia, the bulge that juts out through the abdominal cavity becomes convoluted and it is due to the blood supply that is cut off. If you sense redness and swelling in the affected area accompanied with severe pain; the situation demands a surgery without much procrastination.

How to Buy a Hernia Belt

Hernia belts are available at a local druggist and may also be custom made to suit an individuals comfort and support factors. Thus, before you buy a hernia belt for women, look into pointers such as:

    * Look out for alternatives; hernia belts are available for individuals who have had a hernia surgery or are in the process of deciding to have a repair. There are hernia belts for those who have hernia, however, being at an elementary stage, want to opt for a hernia belt rather than a surgery.
    * There are various levels of support providing hernia belts. A high level of support is required for cases where the hernia is in a more severe form or the support system could be lower if the hernia is not too intense in nature.
    * Make sure to have a word with your doctor or surgeon before you purchase a hernia belt. He may be able to guide you better in terms of the level of support required for you to derive maximum benefits.
    * He will also be in the position to recommend the kind of hernia belt that is meant to compliment your condition. All hernia belts are not fabricated keeping a single set of criteria in mind.
    * Ensure the size that you are purchasing is ideal. A flimsy fit may not serve the purpose of providing optimal support.
    * If you are buying over the counter belt, make sure to look at its features; check if the cushions are removable, the type of fastener used; is it Velcro fastener or a buckle fastener.

Wearing the hernia belt is very easy and does not require much effort on your part; the condition being that you have managed to make the right choice. As the hernia belt has straps, adjust them as you step into the brief pockets. You may adjust the pad positioning, if you want the pad to remain on the side where the hernia is located, you are free to remove the other. As you have the buckles or the Velcro fasteners, you may adjust them as per the pressure that needs to be applied.

Ensure that hernia belts are not your ticket to curing hernia. Surgical intervention is a must and bear in mind that in a majority of cases development of hernia is courtesy your weight lifting tactics. Don't take it for granted that with a hernia belt, you are free to lift the heaviest of weights and go Scott-free!

Femoral Hernia Surgery

The abdomen of the human body, the lower chest and the upper portion of thighs and groin is surrounded and bounded by peritoneum, which is a muscular membrane. This muscular membrane basically holds together or keep all the organs of the digestive system and abdomen in place. In short, the presence of the membrane is of importance as it acts as a protective agent for the organs. In case of exertion or failure of peritoneum, the organs tend to get displaced and from a bulge or sac by pushing against the membrane. The protrusion can sometimes be felt even through the external skin. The protrusion is unnatural and unhealthy, and there are complications which tend to cause the internal organs harm. In extreme cases of hernia, protrusion against the peritoneum was observed have caused tear in it. Well, this a serious condition as it can led to the entanglement of internal organs with the membrane. This obviously causes pain and discomfort and in serious cases, several ailments such as vomiting, in relation to the digestive system are observed. In some cases though, the protrusion of the hernia is so minor that it goes unnoticed and it also does not result into any kind of symptom. Hernias in female as well as male are classified in accordance with the location where they are caused.

About the Femoral Hernia

The Femoral hernia, is usually caused at the bottom most section of the peritoneum, which is in areas where the limbs are joined to the torso and the groin.

    * Location: A femoral hernia occurs in the lowest part of the torso and abdomen, just before the legs start. In case if you are suffering from the femoral hernia you should be feeling certain discomfort in the upper most parts of the thighs and the lower end of the torso, near the groin
    * Cause: Causes of common femoral hernia include, extreme physical strain, chronic cough and cold, constipation, extreme obesity, enlarged prostrate and lifting of extremely heavy objects. In some cases such a hernia can also be present right since birth.
    * Symptoms: Symptoms of this ailment include, discomfort, nausea, pain and in latter and extreme stages, nausea and vomiting.
    * Complication: In some cases, organs and tissues within the abdomen get stuck in the hernia and become incarcerated and gangrenous in some cases.

Now then lets take a look at the femoral hernia surgery which is also known as (generically,) herniotomy right from that start along with the detection and diagnosis to the recovery stages. Also note that there is 'no' alternative to the surgery.

Femoral Hernia Surgery: Diagnosis, Process and Recovery

Now this condition is diagnosed by the doctor in three ways and in most of cases, to analyze and observe the situation more closely and accurately, most of the doctors and surgeons tend to conduct the following procedures one after the another.

   1. Physical Examination: Physical examination of the affected area and a series of questions usually give the doctor an excellent idea as to what exactly has happened in your abdomen and how severe is your hernia. In some cases doctors may also prescribe some common blood tests and urine analysis as a pre-emptive study of your case, especially of your general health and the abdomen.
   2. Ultrasound: Now-a-days, due to presence of faster and sophisticated means of surgery such as laparoscopy, doctors and surgeons make it a point to get a visual and proportional idea of the hernia and hence, an ultrasound is also prescribed (by default).
   3. CT Scan: As mentioned above, the hernia can progress into complicated situations and in cases, where complications have developed a surgeon may also prescribe a CT scan.

Though a physical examination is quite enough in most of the cases, the ultrasound or CT scan are done as they help the surgeon in the actual surgery and also give him/her of a better idea of the condition of the hernia. Now the actual surgery, at least in theory, is simple and pretty much straight forward. Here are two methods with help of which it is done. Now take into note that hernia can be a progressive condition if not attended to. Usually it starts with a protrusion, which irritates the muscular membranes, later it is still ignored it progresses into the formation of a bulge which progresses into a sac. This sac is very dangerous owing to the fact that it can lead to a gangrene and entanglement of internal organs and the membrane.

Open Surgery
Open surgery is the older form of operating a hernia and is usually used (in today's times) where the extent of the hernia is severe. The open surgery starts with a cut which is taken above the hernia on the outermost layer of skin. Then the surgeon untangles the hernia and pushes and rearranges the protrusion into the abdomen. Next the membrane is cleaned up and any damage caused as a result of the hernia is stitched up. In some cases, where extensive damage is observed, a mesh is also stitched onto the damaged part, to keep the organs from getting entangled into the membrane once again. Essentially the mesh also strengthens the damaged part for the membrane. The place where the entanglement can take place is known as the femoral ring. Now depending upon the extent and method of the surgery, three approaches which can be used are: Lockwood’s infra-inguinal approach, Lotheissen‘s trans-inguinal approach, McEvedy’s high approach.

    * The Lockwood’s infra-inguinal approach is used for elective correction.
    * The Lotheissen‘s trans-inguinal approach on the other hand is used for surgery through or around the inguinal canal, where the canal is actually cut open. This canal lies in the lower parts of the abdomen.
    * The McEvedy approach is a quick or emergency approach which is used when strangulation of abdominal organs is observed or suspected.

Laparoscopic surgery
Laparoscopic surgery which is also known as a 'key hole' surgery is a modern method where laparoscopic equipment such as sophisticated, small sized instruments and cameras are used. In such a case, the surgeon make very small, 3-4 incisions in the abdomen and operate with the help of the camera. The surgery is certainly that simple, but it helps in a very speedy recovery, owing to the fact that the number of 'cuts'' taken are small and the healing process is a bit faster.

The recovery process of he Femoral hernia surgery differs from person to person and case to case. Conventionally, after the surgery for a couple of days, the patient is put on liquid diet, which may continue even up to an entire month. Coming back to your routine may require anything from a month to 3 months, again depending upon your situation. Conventionally doctors and surgeons advise patients to take detailed care for an entire year or so. The hernia surgery cost is never specific or fixed and it usually depends upon the extent and damage of the hernia and the method which is used to cure the same. On the whole, a femoral hernia surgery can cost you anything from $2,000 to $10,000. On the other hand there are some package costs which amount to up to, $7,000. On an average, the comprehensive cost amounts to about $14,000 to $15,000, which includes some costs such as after surgery visits and pre-surgery tests. In surgeries where a mesh is used, the cost rises and may also go up to $20,000.

Walking and running after the surgery can be frightful and to some extent even uncomfortable, owing to the complicated position of the hernia. Your doctor and surgeon will however, guide you in a proper manner. I hope that the elaboration on femoral hernia surgery is resourceful.
